U17 Golden Jaguars’ World Cup hopes extinguished as Honduras Rally for 4–2 victory

Guyana’s Matthew Stewart bagged a
brace in a valiant effort against Honduras.

Guyana’s hopes of securing a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup suffered a major setback last night after the Golden Jaguars went down 4–2 to hosts Honduras in their CONCACAF U-17 World Cup Qualifier at the Estadio Francisco Morazán.

The Guyanese side entered the contest needing a victory over the regional powerhouse to seal qualification, having already edged Bermuda 1–0 in their opening fixture.

Despite a spirited first-half performance that saw Guyana take the lead after falling behind earlier, Honduras’ quality and depth ultimately proved decisive as the hosts pulled away in the second period.

Honduras opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Milton Moya unleashed a right-footed strike from outside the box into the top left corner after being set up by Eduardo Romero. Guyana responded five minutes later through Matthew Stewart, who finished from close range after meeting a cross from Nyron Barrow to level proceedings at 1–1.
