Aaron Ramsdale remains Mikel Arteta’s main goalkeeping target this summer, football.london understands.
Arsenal have already bid twice for Ramsdale so far, but Sheffield United have turned down the two offers, with the Championship club looking for a fee of around £30million for the England international.
The 23-year-old Blades man only moved to Bramall Lane last summer, and despite his best efforts, couldn’t help the Yorkshire club stay in the Premier League.
Now, with Sheffield United in the Championship again, Ramsdale is attracting interest from the top-flight in the form of the Gunners, who are looking for a shot-stopper to rival Bernd Leno next season.
With Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga being confirmed as Arsenal players recently, Edu is doing everything in his power to announce a third one as soon as possible.
Ben White will undergo a medical this week, meaning he is likely to be the Gunners’ third signing of the window, but the north London club will be hoping to secure Ramsdale’s move not long after.
Despite mixed opinions on Arsenal moving for Ramsdale, former Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic – who played with the Gunners target at Bournemouth – believes he has the potential to become one of the best around.
Speaking to talkSPORT, via the Mirror, the former Blues man said: “He can become one of the best, especially in the country. He’s already proved that he can play at the highest level. He’s got a lot of potential still to fulfil.
“The more he plays, the more he is going to progress. So I’m not surprised to see him linked with some of the top clubs.
“What he has done over the last couple of years shows everyone the quality he has. With his age, where he is at, the potential is there to become an even better goalkeeper.”
Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer shares a similar view to Begovic on Ramsdale.
Speaking about the goalkeeper last season, Shearer claimed Ramsdale would go onto have a big career at the top level.
“He is only 22 but he’s already got a wealth of experience at the top level. He’s got the fifth-most appearances by a keeper under 23 in Premier League history,” the Newcastle legend said.
“He’s not had an easy season though and neither have Sheffield United.
“For me Ramsdale, he’s got lots of potential, he’s strong, he’s got the agility to stop shots from distance and he’s fearless, putting his body on the line from close range.”
