Andre Onana to Arsenal transfer: Major blow, kit theory, Ten Hag resigned to sale

Arsenal have planned a busy summer transfer window, with the Gunners hierarchy prepared to back current Manager Mikel Arteta despite an 8th placed finish in the Premier League last season.

The Gunners are looking to sign a minimum of five players in this transfer window, with a squad revamp required to help the team bridge the gap to the so-called top six next season.

Benfica defender Nuno Tavares has kicked off Arsenal’s transfer window, signing on a long-term deal to provide competition to first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney.

With the likes of Bernd Leno, David Luiz and Granit Xhaka thought to be angling for a move away, their replacement options have been identified by Edu.

Cameroon International and Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana is the first choice option to replace the German goalkeeper.

However, there have been many complications in progressing a deal this summer for the 25-year-old, as he was banned for doping in January 2021, a decision which Onana labelled “excessive and disproportionate”.

The goalkeeper had his 12 month ban reduced to nine months back in June, meaning he will now be eligible to play football again in November 2021.

Here is the latest on Arsenal’s pursuit of the goalkeeper.

Lyon lead Arsenal in Onana race

Recent reports have suggested that the Gunners will be facing competition this summer for the signature of Onana from Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Reports from France claim that Peter Bosz’s side lead the race for Onana, but the deal is yet to be finalised. Arteta still has a chance of landing the 25-year-old but may have to offer him guaranteed game time ahead of current No.1 Bernd Leno – something he refused to promise Argentine keeper Emi Martinez last summer, before the academy graduate moved to Aston Villa in September.

football.london understands that despite Onana preferring to play in France, this will not deter the Gunners hierarchy from their attempts to sign the 25-year-old.

If a move to North London failed to materialise, then a move for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale could be on.

One advantage Arsenal have over Lyon in the race to sign Onana, is that the Gunners are not struggling as much financially at the moment compared to the French side.

New home kit theory

Arsenal have had a rather successful spell with shirt producer adidas, who have produced some lovely kits for the team.

In the summer of 2019 and after two decades with Nike and Puma, the north London outfit signed a £300million deal with the German manufacturers to produce their home, away and third kits for the next three years.

New leaked pictures of the home kit have been leaked recently, and fans have been quick to jump on one particular detail which could hint at Onana’s eventual arrival.

As per FootyHeadlines, Arsenal‘s 2021/22 home shirt will have a fresh look. Its mainly red (‘scarlet’) with white sleeves and side panels.

And for the first time since Adidas’ return to the club, the 3 Stripes are navy.

Inside the collar is the logo which features the Arsenal for Everyone initiative, which is a diversity campaign that was set up in 2008.

Supporters have an interesting transfer theory in regards to ‘leaked’ images of the 2021/22 home kit.

As the design is slightly different to what we’ve seen in the past, the image of the ‘leaked’ jersey shows white going down the hip section – very similar to what we see Ajax wear usually.

Is this a sign for what is to come in the clubs pursuit of the 25-year-old?

Ten Hag resigned to losing Onana

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that there is an agreement in place for the goalkeeper’s departure from the club – as long as certain conditions are met by potential admirers.

In a statement published last year, Ajax coach Ten Hag discussed Andre Onana’s possible departure from the Dutch team.

These comments came a year ago, but it is understood that nothing has changed since then, meaning the validity of these comments still remain.

They came at a time where the Cameroonian was attracting attention from the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The summer window is officially open, and it’s going to be tough to keep up with the comings and goings in and out of the Emirates.

“Andre is very important to us, of course we don’t want to lose him. But it’s true that the agreements were made last year,” said the coach.

“There is an agreement with Onana about a possible exit in case the team appears and the right price. But as far as I know, no concrete offer has been made to Ajax.”

Ten Hag’s comments suggest the likely departure of the goalkeeper, which will be received as a boost by Arsenal and Lyon who are locked in this battle to sign Onana.
