Nuno Tavares has been unveiled as an Arsenal player, joining from Benfica for a fee in the region of £7million.
Tavares can be deployed as a left-back, a wingback and even as a right-back, providing Mikel Arteta with versatility that draws similarities to Hale End graduate Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The 21-year-old, who will wear the number 20 shirt with the Gunners, will join up with his new teammates next week once he has travelled from Portugal and completed his isolation protocols.
The Portuguese under-21 international has revealed what qualities he will bring to the Arsenal team next season as he will likely deputise for Kieran Tierney on the left flank.
“I am fast, I am good at shooting with my right foot, but I’m left-footed,” Tavares told Arsenal.com.
“I can dribble, improvise. That’s my qualities, my technique. I have more qualities and I will find more in this club.
“I’m so excited because it is a big club and for me as a young guy, it is a pleasure to be here.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal fans have subsequently taken to social media to voice their support for the club’s first signing of the summer.
Furthermore, Tavares also admitted that Arteta and chief executive Edu played a huge part in him deciding to join the Gunners, even though he reportedly had a more lucrative contract offer from Spanish side Real Sociedad, according to the Daily Mail.
“When I finished the season my agent told me that Arsenal were interested in me. In the first instance I was very happy and after this I dreamed about it, and [spoke about it] with my mum. I was so excited to be here, and now I’m here I’m so happy.
The summer window is officially open, and it’s going to be tough to keep up with the comings and goings in and out of the Emirates.

“Mikel and Edu helped me so much. They speak with me every time, and call me and I feel people want me here. I like that because I need this power and I’m so grateful for this.”
The Gunners fans seemed happy to wrap up the deal as the club look to complete the signing of Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga in the coming days – with the deal potentially rising to £18million football.london understands.
