Chelsea’s path to securing a transfer for Romelu Lukaku may have taken a big step forward, with reports stating that Antonio Conte is set to leave Inter in the next two days.
Gazzetta dello Sport state that the “official farewell” could come in the next 48 hours – the time it will take to officially complete all paperwork to part ways.
While there will apparently be regrets on both sides that Conte could not continue in his role, it is stated that there will be no ill will between parties, with a realisation that the move will be forced by financial requirements rather than anything personal.
Conte has just led Inter to the Serie A title for the first time since 2010, following a year in which Romelu Lukaku hit top form. The striker bettered his 23-goal haul in Serie A from the 2019/20 season with 24 this year as he spearheaded the attack.
Despite the success on the field, Conte’s exit is described as “inevitable”, with Inter needing to significantly cut costs following the pandemic.
Conte had apparently been clear for some time that he would not accept his work over the last two years being undermined by altering plans that had ultimately proved successful.
The manager was reportedly displeased by the fact that a course that had been agreed upon before his arrival was being significantly altered, and voiced his feelings that the club would need to strengthen if they are to challenge in Europe.
The club have acquired a substantial loan to help matters, but will need to raise money by cutting wages and through player sales – meaning Chelsea could be perfectly placed to profit.
The Blues have been linked with a move for Lukaku this summer with Timo Werner flattering to deceive in attack following his arrival from RB Leipzig.

Lukaku joined Inter in 2019 for around £70million from Manchester United, where it had not quite worked out for the Belgium striker.
It was said to be unlikely that he would leave the Italian club with Conte still in charge, due to his strong relationship with the manager.
However, with Conte set to leave that could open the door for Chelsea to pounce.
