After two months of the new year, the race for the title, the top four and the relegation battle are all heating up after the most recent run of results.
Man City seemed to be cantering to their sixth Premier League title but a recent minor blip has now allowed Liverpool and Chelsea back into the conversation, though it would take something drastic for the Blues to hunt down a 13-point gap (with one game in hand).
Thomas Tuchel’s side are sitting pretty in third place currently ahead of Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United, and with the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League silverware up for grabs, a team with substantial pedigree in knockout competitions may just ensure a top four spot before going hell for leather at the cups for the remainder of 2021/22.
You can certainly forgive them for doing this with the points gap to the top still at double digits and any other trophies won this season that would add to the historic FIFA Club World Cup win that the west London outfit achieved in Abu Dhabi.
For Arsenal and Spurs, top four is the main aim and wins at the weekend against Brentford and Man City respectively has seen both teams’ chances boosted as the pair know they must topple Man United if either are to make the final cut for Champions League football next season.
West Ham meanwhile, after some initial optimism that David Moyes could attain a rare top four finish with the big dogs of the top flight, have slightly tailed off after they failed to add any extra depth to their squad in the mid-season window.
Recent slip ups against Newcastle and Leicester have meant that any European finish now would be classed as an achievement, as all focus perhaps being shifted towards going as a far as possible in this season’s Europa League.
For the other London sides, Crystal Palace and Brentford will be looking to pick up some form in March and onwards as both look to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle after some poor form over February for Patrick Vieira and Thomas Frank’s sides.
