Arsenal can complete transfer four years after initial interest after Bayern Munich problem

Arsenal have been one of the busiest Premier League clubs in terms of transfer business this summer so far.

The Gunners have completed two deals – with Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga both arriving in north London recently, but the club are not done there.

Ben White is set to join the already signed duo in the near future, with more names being linked with a switch to Arsenal as the days go on.

A central midfielder seems to be a priority for Mikel Arteta, especially with Granit Xhaka looking increasingly likely to depart, with personal terms already agreed with AS Roma.

The likes of Ruben Neves, Donny van de Beek and Yves Bissouma have been linked with the Gunners, but a long-term target may have just become available.

Leon Goretzka, the Bayern Munich star is reportedly in talks with his club over a new and improved contract, with his current deal due to reach its conclusion next summer.

Goretzka, who is valued at a whopping £63million on Transfermarkt, wants to become one of the club’s top earners and take home the same as some of his colleagues.

However, it appears Bayern do not see it in the same way as the Germany midfielder.

According to journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft and German outlet Sport Bild, Goretzka’s camp has become ‘irritated’ that the talks over a new contract have not progressed as well as hoped.

Other clubs, with Manchester United being the only one namechecked, are ‘seriously getting involved’, it is claimed.

But Arsenal have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old in the past. Back in November 2017, when Goretzka was playing for Schalke, the Daily Mail (via Bleacher Report ) said that Arsene Wenger wanted to sign the then up and coming German star. Bayern Munich, though, completed the signing of the midfielder in January 2018.

Despite contract talks seemingly stalling between Bayern and Goretzka, it appears that the Bundesliga champions do want to keep hold of the Germany international.

New boss Julian Nagelsmann recently revealed that he wants to work with the former Schalke man for “many years” yet, indicating his desire for the midfielder to extend his stay.

“Leon is an important player for us. I would be happy to work with him for many years,” Nagelsmann told reporters at his first press conference as Bayern boss.

“I think very highly of him. He is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world. Everyone likes to have him in their team.”
