Arsenal midfielders after Arteta and Edu transfer masterclass
Funds will be limited after the club announced a £47.8m loss for the financial year from 2019 to 2020 and those figures are likely to look even worse in the next financial year due to the significant impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
But the Gunners have long been regarded as the Premier League’s self-sustainable club, utilising finances they have accrued through player sales and departures.
Midfield is a key area that Arteta wants to bolster this summer and there are several names who fit into the Spaniard’s plans going into the new campaign.
football.london takes a look at how Arsenal’s midfield could look next season, including the players who are likely to head for the exit door this summer.
Triple injury boost
Arsenal have been handed a timely boost ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final first-leg tie against Slavia Prague.
The trio missed Saturday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool through injury and illness respectively.
But in a six-minute ‘Inside Training’ video that has been uploaded to the club’s official website Saka, Smith Rowe, and Xhaka were all involved which would suggest they’ll be in contention to face Slavia Prague.
With that said, Saka was spotted in Friday’s session at London Colney prior to the Liverpool clash, but was not risked by Arteta who went with Nicolas Pepe in attack.
The summer transfer window is just around the corner.
And the rumour mill is already starting to pick up speed.
Arsenal will not have a huge amount of money to spend, but Mikel Arteta will be hoping to make a number of moves, with loanee Martin Odegaard high up the list of priorities to bring in on a permanent deal.

Arsenal can sign ‘next Bruno Fernandes’ for £53m
Speaking of Arsenal’s midfield, a new name has been linked with a summer move to north London as a potential alternative to Martin Odegaard.
Portuguese outlet A Bola claims the Gunners ‘continue to follow’ the progress of Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves ahead of a potential transfer this summer.
The 22-year-old has scored 15 goals in Liga NOS this season, also has three assists to his name and has been dubbed the ‘next Bruno Fernandes’ due to the similarities in playing style.
In addition, the report claims Arsenal have the potential signing of Goncalves ‘on the table’ for next season.
However, his asking price could prove a stumbling block.
Goncalves reportedly has a release clause in his contract of £51.3million (€60m) and it is claimed that Sporting are unlikely to accept much lower than that.
