Arsenal handed Nabil Fekir transfer boost as Mikel Arteta searches for creative midfielder

Arsenal may be able to get their hands on a player they have been linked with for some time in Nabil Fekir this summer.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a creative lynchpin, having missed out on long-term target Emi Buendia to Aston Villa, and with Martin Odegaard looking more and more likely to stay put at Real Madrid ahead of next season.

Odegaard has become a transfer priority for Arsenal having impressed during his loan spell, but Real Madrid do not want to lose the talented Norwegian, likely forcing Edu and Mikel Arteta to look elsewhere.

But around 330 miles South of Madrid lies a player who has also caught Arsenal’s eye previously in Fekir, who impressed for Betis this season as Manuel Pellegrini’s men secured Europa League qualification.

Fekir was close to a move to the Premier League previously after impressing for Lyon, but Liverpool pulled out of the deal late on due to a pre-existing knee injury.

The France international went on to join Betis in 2019 for less than £18million, and this season managed five goals and six assists as Betis returned to Europe.

According to Goal, the 27-year-old may now be about to return to the radar of Arsenal as they look to land a creative midfielder ahead of next season, and it’s also suggested the player himself might just be open to a move.

“Another player that they like that plays in that sort of creative area is Nabil Fekir,” the report said.

“He’s over in Spain at the moment with Betis. He would absolutely be keen on a move, not just to Arsenal, but to the Premier League – he missed out on his big move to Liverpool before.”

Fekir is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, around half of what he was valued at before his Lyon exit and before that move to Liverpool broke down.

The concern the Reds had related to a previous ACL injury and the wearing down of the cartilage in the knee, which experts claimed could mean the 27-year-old would face problems earlier on in his career than players usually would.
