Arsenal have been linked with a move for Ryan Bertrand ahead of this summer, but they must be wary of Arsene Wenger’s golden rule.
Midfielder Granit Xhaka has had to cover for Tierney during a spell out injury ahead of his return in recent weeks, further highlighting the need for depth in that position.
According to reports, Arsenal could make a move for Bertrand, but given he is now 31 years of age, the Gunners need to head an approach often practised by former boss Wenger.
During Wenger’s reign, he would only give short-term contracts to those over 30. The Frenchman once explained: “It’s not over 30, it’s over 32. So when you have a player [who is] 32 he will just get a one-year contract.
“It depends on the positions as well. If a central defender, then no problem to sign them until 34. But a striker is different.
“After 32 you go from year to year. A midfielder as well, after 32 you go from year-to-year.”

That’s something Arsenal might want to keep in mind when they consider making a move for Bertrand, who will turn 32 in the opening month of next season.
And there is no greater proof than winger Willian, who was handed a three-year contract at the age of 31 when he arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer.
The Brazilian has struggled since, and he is now being heavily tipped for an exit this summer, with a move to Inter Miami mooted.
