Arsenal set deadline to complete Arthur Melo transfer ahead of north London derby vs Tottenham

Arsenal are determined to complete the signing of Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo in the coming hours.

The Gunners are very short in the midfield department, with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny both at the Africa Cup of Nations right now. Meanwhile, the north Londoners let Ainsley Maitland-Niles leave to join AS Roma on loan last week.

That leaves Mikel Arteta with only Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga as his only senior midfield options, but the former is now suspended for two matches after being shown a red card in Thursday’s goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

football.london reported on Wednesday that the Gunners were hopeful of signing Juventus star Arthur on loan until the end of the season.

Now, football.london understands that the north Londoners are pushing to try and complete the deal before Sunday’s North London Derby with Tottenham.

However, they would have to register the Brazilian by 12pm on Friday, January 14, for him to be available for selection, as per Premier League regulations.

Their rules read: “Subject to the provisions of Rule V.1, the deadline for receipt by the board of all duly completed documents required by these rules to effect the registration of a player shall be 12 noon on the last Working Day before the date of the first league match in which the club making the application intends him to play, save that the international transfer certificate and evidence of eligibility to take up employment in the United Kingdom (in both cases if applicable) may be provided thereafter (but must be provided before the player is eligible to play for a club in a league match).”

With the game against Spurs being on Sunday, the last working day before that clash is Friday – meaning time is against Arteta and Arsenal.
