Arsenal told they can sign their very own David Beckham if Edu completes £60m transfer

Arsenal are determined to bring a new creative midfielder to the club before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

football.london reported on Tuesday morning that the Gunners, as well as another London club, have proposed a player plus cash deal for Leicester City star James Maddison.

It’s understood that Maddison is ‘top of the list’ for Arsenal this summer, but negotiations are ‘very slow’ at the moment.

The Foxes are likely to demand £60million for the 24-year-old England international, who is open to moving to north London after spending three years at the King Power Stadium.

Maddison, who is somewhat of a free-kick specialist, has plenty to offer Arsenal if he was to sign – and has received some pretty big comparisons in the past.

Former Leicester star Tony Cottee went as far as saying that the England midfielder reminds him of Manchester United legend David Beckham.

“This lad’s done brilliant. I saw him at Norwich a lot last season. He’s a really good player. The one slight thing he hasn’t got is electric pace,” Cottee said in 2018.

“He reminds me of David Beckham. If you watch him play, he runs like Beckham, he takes free kicks like Beckham, he’s got good vision and is a good passer of the ball.

“He’s going to be a top, top player. I think he’ll be in the England squad come the next announcement.”

So, Arteta could be getting his very own Beckham if Edu manages to secure the £60m deal for Maddison, but not if Brendan Rodgers has anything to do with it.

The Foxes boss insisted recently that his playmaker was not for sale and that he was happy at the club.

“The players want to stay. It’s a really exciting time at the club,” Rodgers said recently.

“There’s lots of gossip and speculation around but I’m loving working with the guys here, they love being here, and we certainly have no need to sell.

“So I would suspect we’re looking to keep our best players.”

Arsenal are also interested in Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid, with the Norway international likely to be around £18m cheaper than Maddison, with Los Blancos wanting £42.6m.

Odegaard spent the second half of last season on loan with the Gunners and is the subject of interest from Arteta yet again.
