Barcelona have received a financial setback ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Catalan giants are already in the midst of a financial crisis with debts racking up to a total of more than £800million, and they won’t be helped by another setback.
According to reports in Spain, after striker Luis Suarez swapped Barcelona for Atletico Madrid for as little as £4.5million, it was agreed that Barca would receive another £1.7million (€2million) in bonuses depending on one condition.
It was reportedly agreed that if Atletico Madrid matched Barcelona’s performance in the Champions League from last season, the bonus would be automatically triggered.
Barcelona reached the quarter-final last season and Atletico Madrid failed to progress through the Round of 16 this term, losing to Chelsea in both legs, the second of which was played on Wednesday night.
Atletico lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and 3-0 on aggregate with Suarez continuing his poor Champions League record.
The Uruguayan star has failed to score in the Champions League again this season, meaning he hasn’t scored away from home in the competition since September of 2015.
And his failure to help Atleti through to the next round has cost his former club more than £1.7million in what is another setback on top of their growing debt.

And that could impact Arsenal‘s Hector Bellerin with the Spaniard linked with a return to Barca this summer.
Bellerin is reportedly wanted by new Barca president Joan Laporta, who was re-elected to the role last weekend and sworn in on Wednesday after raising his £106.69million bank guarantee in the nick of time.
But that bank guarantee won’t influence transfers with the debt issue to put right first, and missing out on an extra £1.7million certainly won’t help the Catalans as they put together their transfer strategy for the summer, and it may not help Bellerin seal a return to Camp Nou, if indeed he does want to leave Arsenal.
