Ben Chilwell’s two-word Reece James Chelsea verdict helps settle Trent Alexander-Arnold debate

England and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has labelled Blues teammate Reece James ‘the best’ on international duty amid the ongoing Trent Alexander-Arnold debate.

James, 21, has been one of the shining lights this season already for Thomas Tuchel and co. with his four crucial goals that currently have the European Champions top of the table in the Premier League going into the November international break.

“This is the best I’ve performed,” he said in his England press conference ahead of Albania and San Marino World Cup qualifiers. “Recent results and performances have shown that as well. We’re creating a lot of chances and we have great players around us.

“When you’re playing well and the team is performing, keeping clean sheets and winning games, it obviously helps us build confidence.”

Asked how Tuchel’s coaching has improved him, James added: “The style of play from last season to now, a lot has changed. Formation has changed, what he demands from the players has changed. He wants everyone to be attacking. That’s helped this season so far.”

James’ latest performance against Burnley added to his plethora of quality games that the right-back has starred in for the Blues with his magnificent assist for Kai Havertz’ headed opener against Sean Dyche’s side.

On the same weekend, Alexander-Arnold was busy showing off his class too with his wonderful free-kick goal in Liverpool’s crushing 3-2 defeat to high-flying West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Amid this domestic break for the players in question, their international teammate Chilwell may have just settled the debate that has even split journalistic opinion in the past too.

The ex-Leicester man was caught in deep conversation with the 21-year-old and as he approached the filming camera, he stated: “My right-back.”

This was followed by the illustrious two-word verdict that may have helped calm the debate: “The best.”

For James personally, from his recent press conference, he doesn’t let the topic of debate get to his head as he can see exactly what the Liverpool man and Kyle Walker offer in competition to himself during the international period.

“We each have a different style of play,” James added. “Trent has obviously been at the top for quite a few years now. Obviously Kyle Walker as well. Competition is very tough.

“There are full backs who are not here at a very good level. I’m competing with very good players, it’s quite tough. We just have to keep pushing each other.

“When you come away you have to put club rivalry aside. When we’re here we are one team and our aim is to win no matter who we’re playing against. We have to put it aside and focus on our task here. It’s not easy. We play most of our football for our clubs but we want to win wherever we are.”

Whoever starts in the right-back role against Albania and San Marino could go someway also in settling the debate in an unbiased way as we are about to see what Gareth Southgate makes of it all.
