As Canada host Mexico in Edmonton Tuesday night on Paramount+, they may be getting more than they bargained for in terms of home field advantage. The Concacaf World Cup qualifier will get frosty after a snow  filled. While things should clear up snow-wise by the time the game kicks off at 9 p.m. ET, that won’t stop there from being icy conditions.

Below are the conditions expected during the match:

  • 9 p.m. ET: 19 degrees (11% precipitation; winds NW 11 mph)
  • 10 p.m. ET: 17 degrees (11% precipitation; winds NW 9 mph)
  • 11 p.m. ET: 16 degrees (11% precipitation; winds NW 8 mph)

Canada wanted to give Mexico the worst possible conditions to play in as they look to cement their place in the Octagonal but with expected temps that could feel like -17 degrees, this could be a tough one to play in for everyone involved. Considering where most of Canada’s players play their club soccer, they’re not used to temperatures like this either.

Commonwealth Stadium has a thin pitch which will likely freeze easily which could give a Canada side expected to sit deep and counter an easier time. With a win or a draw, Canada will go above Mexico in World Cup qualification standings but a Mexico victory would see El Tri open a four-point gap over Canada in first or second place.
