Chelsea announce changes to UEFA Super Cup squad as latest summer transfer is confirmed

Here’s all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

UEFA Super Cup squad announced

Chelsea have confirmed their squad for today’s UEFA Super Cup clash against Villarreal in Belfast.

And the big news is that Romelu Lukaku has not been included.

There was hope at the weekend the Blues would be able to complete the Belgian’s signing from Inter Milan and that he would have time to train with his new teammates before they travelled out to Northern Ireland.

However, Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge has yet to be officially confirmed and, as a result, he will not be included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the game.

The group have travelled out to Belfast for the game, and Chelsea have made changes to the initial squad submitted to UEFA on Saturday.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah – who is expected to leave Chelsea on loan before the transfer window closes – have both been added to the squad.

Deal confirmed

Yesterday morning (August 10), the Blues confirmed that young striker Armando Broja had completed a season-long loan move to fellow Premier League outfit Southampton.

“Armando Broja will spend the 2021/22 season on loan in the Premier League after completing a move to Southampton,” a statement via Chelsea‘s official website reads. “It will be the first experience of regular top-flight football in England for the teenage striker, who has advanced through the Chelsea Academy ranks since signing at the age of nine.

“The Albanian international finished the campaign as one of the top-scoring teenagers in Europe and was rewarded on his return to Stamford Bridge with a new five-year contract.

“He has been involved throughout pre-season under Thomas Tuchel, scoring against Peterborough United and Bournemouth.”

Broja becomes the second Chelsea striker to leave this summer after Olivier Giroud completed his permanent transfer to AC Milan last month.
