Chelsea player ratings vs Burnley: Reece James superb, Jorginho class, Ross Barkley good

Edouard Mendy

Had nothing to do before the 25th minute when Cornet shot straight at him. One hairy moment after the break where he struggled to control a backpass and was clattered by Wood having made the clearance. Nothing he could do with the goal as his defenders fell asleep. 7

Reece James

One of Chelsea’s biggest attacking threats throughout as he pushed incredibly high on Charlie Taylor. Wonderful cross for Havertz’s opener, it was on a plate for the German. Almost had another assist but Silva headed off the post. He’s in supreme form right now and could probably get even better. 9

Andreas Christensen

Might have done better with a headed chance in the fifth minute he put wide. Defensively he really wasn’t tested at all but was lost for the equaliser as Rodriguez ghosted in behind him. 7

Thiago Silva

Making his third start in a week which was a surprise. Very comfortable in the opening 45 against Wood and Cornet, didn’t give either of them an inch. Wood was replaced in the second half by Rodriguez who didn’t fare much better. 7

Antonio Rudiger

Also had a headed effort off target in the first half as Chelsea dominated and had very little to do defensively for the majority of the game. Didn’t track Vydra’s run for the equaliser. 7

Ben Chilwell

Back in the starting XI after a rest in midweek and dovetailed nicely with Havertz on the left though saw a lot less of the ball than James did. Didn’t have the easiest afternoon with Dwight McNeil and could have closed down Westwood a bit quicker for the equaliser. 7

Jorginho

Picked Burnley apart with ease at times in the first half though he did leave a lot of the work Kante to get Chelsea on the move. Controlled the game after half time, made a number of smart interceptions too on when Burnley threatened. 8

N’Golo Kante

Recalled to the side having missed out in midweek against Malmo. Full of energy in the first half as he tried to link up with the forwards rather than sit centrally. Looked tired in the second half, no surprise having had not a lot of football in recent weeks. 7

Ross Barkley

Started a Premier League game for Chelsea for the first time since July 2020. He was bright early on, going close with a 20-yarder and was constantly wanting the ball off his teammates on the half turn. His decision making in the final third still needs to be much better, though. 7

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Plenty of energy in the opening 45 but didn’t get the better of the Burnley defenders too often. That changed after the break as he found more room playing centrally. Should have done better with a close range chance to make it 2-0 and didn’t have much of an impact in the second half. 7

Kai Havertz

Earned the first wrath of Tuchel for the day after mis-controlling a ball on the edge of the Burnley box. Superbly planted header to give Chelsea the lead just past the half hour. Should have made it two shortly after the break and was in fact rather quiet in the second period. 7

Substitutes

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Barkley, 73′)

Plenty of drive from midfield but didn’t have a huge impact on the game. 6

Mason Mount (for Kante, 83′) No rating

Christian Pulisic (for Hudson-Odoi, 82′) No rating
