Chelsea receive mixed news on Man City’s Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling amid transfer talk

Chelsea look to have received mixed news regarding Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling as the Blues prepare to make their moves once the Romelu Lukaku Inter Milan situation is sorted out.

Whilst defence is a key area of this summer’s £200million squad rebuild, the attack is another area of concern with Lukaku’s departure creating a big void that needs to be filled. Not only this, but the likes of Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are reportedly not happy with their own situations at the club. Obviously, not all three attackers will be sold in the forthcoming weeks due to the unique 2022/23 season that will stretch Thomas Tuchel’s squad to the max but at least one could depart if attacking reinforcements were to be brought in this summer.

Amid links to the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Christopher Nkunku, two Premier League wingers are also reportedly being looked at as the Blues look to poach at least one of Man City’s forwards following the arrivals of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez in east Manchester. Having already, by the looks of it, been defeated in their pursuit of Gabriel Jesus at the hands of Arsenal, who are expected to wrap up a £50m deal soon, the Blues need to get back into the thick of things and it seems as though their interest in one forward, in particular, is legitimate if The Athletic’s latest report is to be believed.

They have reported that Three Lions star Sterling is Chelsea’s main attacking priority this summer with £50m needed to be coughed up if the player with one year left on his contract was to be cashed in on this summer. The article goes on to add that as of today, there hasn’t been any contact between the two clubs but that could all change.

Fabrizio Romano echoed this sentiment with his own update on his latest podcast where he said: “There is genuine interest from Chelsea in Raheem Sterling, they’re really exploring this possibility. No talks yet between the clubs, Chelsea are waiting to see how much he would cost.”

One player who had been tenuously linked to making the switch to Stamford Bridge prior to the transfer window opening was Mahrez but despite having limited time left on his contract, almost similar to his temmate Sterling, it is understood that Pep Guardiola isn’t interested in listening to offers for the Algerian winger.

Their report read: “Riyad Mahrez is another attacker whose contract is up next summer. However, the Algerian is expected to stay at City beyond this transfer window.”
