Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Monday, February 22.
Bayern Munich want to keep their ‘good’ German national players
Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is eager to keep Niklas Sule at the club amid interest from Chelsea.
The 25-year-old is reportedly high up on the Blues’ shortlist for a new central defender this summer as Thiago Silva is yet to sign a new deal and AC Milan are keen on signing on-loan defender Fikayo Tomori on a permanent basis.
He has started 11 out of 19 Bundesliga games and his contract runs out in the summer of 2022.
“We want the good German national players at FC Bayern,” said Rummenigge, as quoted by Spox. “Niklas still has one year of contract.
“We will hold talks and see where they lead. We will look at it seriously and calmly until the summer. Corona [coronavirus] has also caused financial damage to FC Bayern.
“If we find a solution, we are generally happy to extend the contract, but that will only be possible under certain conditions.”
He is thought to be valued at £33million.
A change of heart from Chelsea defender?
Marcos Alonso, who reportedly wanted to leave the club after falling out of favour under old boss Frank Lampard, is claimed to be open to signing a new deal at Chelsea.
After not starting for the Blues since their 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion back in late-September, the 30-year-old has been an ever-present figure under new boss Tuchel.
He has displaced summer signing Ben Chilwell as the side’s first-choice left-back and now The Sun claims he is hoping for a one-year extension to his stay at Chelsea.
He has started four of Chelsea’s last five Premier League games and doesn’t seem to be likely to lose his spot any time soon.
“I have more freedom to attack because we are better covered for defending, but it’s not about the system,” the defender told Chelsea’s official website.
“When we play more organised, all together, knowing what to do and where to be on the pitch then this team has great potential to achieve big things.
“We have a long way until the end of the season to show that and prove we deserve a better position in the table than where we are now but we have to fight for it.”
The substitute gets substituted
Chelsea fans spotted a dejected-looking Callum Hudson-Odoi after the second-half substitute was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.
The 20-year-old replaced Tammy Abraham at half-time but he only lasted half an hour or so as Tuchel hauled him off not long later.
And it wasn’t an injury-related matter.
“In a game that it is hard to create chances you need to rely on counter-pressing to maybe force errors and get an easy chance,” Tuchel said in his post-match press conference. “For that you need to be totally on and sharp.
“I didn’t feel this from Callum today. He missed chances to counter-press, missed easy balls. I didn’t think he felt the game.

“Maybe it was unfair but I didn’t get the feeling today that I normally get from him.
“It was a hard decision but nothing that will stick for long. Tomorrow it will be forgotten and we will prepare for Atletico.”
Some eagled-eyed Chelsea supporters on Reddit posted a video of the youngster cutting a dejected figure in the stands following his substitution.
Whether or not he has ruined his chances of facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday remains to be seen.
