Chelsea star Jorginho makes surprising Ballon d’Or claim as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is snubbed

Jorginho believes that Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne should win the 2021 Ballon d’Or, and not his Chelsea and Italy teammates.

The midfielder is one of five Blues players nominated for the prestigious award that recognises the best footballers in the world, alongside Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku.

Having played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Champions League victory and Italy’s Euro 2020 win, Jorginho’s place on the 30-man shortlist is unquestionable, yet he doesn’t rate his chances of taking the top prize.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, the 29-year-old joked: “If I don’t vote for me, who will vote? I want to have at least one vote!”

The winner of the Ballon d’Or is decided by journalists as well as the captains and coaches of national teams, so while Jorginho cannot vote, he can reveal who he would have picked for this year’s award.

And his choice is somewhat surprising.

“I believe I’d vote for Kevin de Bruyne for everything he’s been doing and for the beautiful football he’s been showing in recent years,” said Jorginho.

“For those who like football, it’s great to see him play because he understands football, he is a player with above-average intelligence.”

While it is curious to see the midfielder not pick one of his Chelsea or Italian compatriots, it does at least show Jorginho is unbiased, something that cannot be said for voters in the past who have tended to favour their close friends and teammates, regardless of their credentials.

11 of the last 12 Ballon d’Or’s have been awarded to either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, and calls of bias towards the two players intensified when last year’s awards were controversially called off, thereby snubbing the overwhelming favourite for the prize, Robert Lewandowski.

As for his chances of actually winning, Jorginho is more in the running than he might think, with Sky Bet listing him at 25/1, making him the fourth favourite behind Lewandowski, Messi and Mohamed Salah.

And Thomas Tuchel believes that his player is worthy of the trophy.

Football Italia quoted the Chelsea manager as saying: “Jorginho deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.

“He has a great vision of football. He’s a very intelligent player and it’s a pleasure to be his coach.

“For me, individual prizes don’t have great significance, it’s impossible to make a real comparison between several players of different roles.

“I would like one of my players to win it because I would know what the effect would be.

“Then Jorginho is a great person and an excellent player, but in general it’s not the most important thing.”

The Ballon d’Or awards will be held on November 29.
