Chelsea urged not to make Mohamed Salah mistake on Conor Gallagher after N’Golo Kante claim

Chelsea have been told not to repeat the same mistakes they made on Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne with Conor Gallagher.

The Blues famously moved on both Salah and de Bruyne at a young age after deciding they would not be able to force their way into the first team at Stamford Bridge; two choices they would later rue as both players became Premier League stars for rival teams.

Gallagher, 21, is currently enjoying a breakout season in the English top-flight on loan at Crystal Palace, where he is the Eagles’ top-scorer this season with six goals.

His performances have caught the eye of many, not least the south Londoners themselves, whose fans have loved watching Gallagher show off his talents at Selhurst Park this season.

Now former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino insists the Blues can’t allow Gallagher to escape their grip and said he thinks the midfielder could be a mainstay in Thomas Tuchel’s side for years to come.

“He can’t leave – they can’t let this one go,” the 59-year-old told talkSPORT.

“Too many great players have left Chelsea and have gone elsewhere. This one, I think it’ll be a bridge too far to let him go.

“He does one thing Chelsea haven’t got – they haven’t got a proper goalscoring midfielder. And I mean more centrally. They’ve got lots of wide men who can chip in goals.”

Cascarino went on to suggest that Gallagher could go on to emulate one of Chelsea’s greatest ever midfielders N’Golo Kante.

The World Cup and Champions League winner has been one of the Blues’ best players since he first arrived in west London in 2016, but isn’t particularly known for his goalscoring ability, having managed just 13 goals in 230 appearances for Chelsea.

Gallagher has 14 career goals to his name already in exactly 100 professional club appearances, and it’s this part of his game that Cascarino says can elevate him above the level of Kante.

“Gallagher is like N’Golo Kante with goals,” added the pundit.

“Kante is a brilliant player, he does so many good things for the side, but he has never got goals and I see that in Conor Gallagher. I think he can do what Kante can do, and give you a return of goals in numbers as well.

“He can get into the 18-yard box and ten seconds later he can make a tackle in his own 18-yard box. There aren’t many players in the game who can do that, and Conor Gallagher is one of them.

“I’d be amazed if Tuchel doesn’t have him back for next season, to be ready to fight for a place in that Chelsea starting line-up.”
