Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher has set himself the goal of going “even further” in his development as he looks to try and force his way into head coach Thomas Tuchel’s plans this season.

Gallagher, who is 21, has spent the last two seasons out on loan and is now determined to lay down a marker at Stamford Bridge and cement himself as a regular first-team player.

After spending the 2019/20 campaign on loan at both Charlton Athletic and Swansea City, the midfielder spent last season with West Bromwich Albion, sampling the taste of Premier League football for the very first time.

His time at the Hawthorns, despite the Baggies’ relegation to the Championship, proved to be a roaring success, as he cemented himself as a first-team regular, racking up 32 appearances in league and cup.

Now, Gallagher is focused on taking his game to the next level, making an honest admission that he currently finds himself in a position where he is “nowhere near” where he wants to be at.

“I know defensive intelligence is something that I can improve on so I’ve been working on that last season and now during pre-season, Gallagher told Chelsea’s club website. “I’ve been told I need to get better at that so I’m focusing on it.

“I’m only 21 so I feel like I’ve gained a lot of experience already and developed a lot as a player. It’s still just the start because I’m nowhere near where I want to be.

“I know I can go even further.”

As well as outlining his plans for the season ahead, the former Charlton loanee has also opened up on his favourite role and characteristics, admitting that he considers himself as an all-round midfielder and one that likes to pop up all over the pitch.

“I think of myself as an all-round midfielder,” Gallagher added. “I like to play box to box and just be busy on the pitch, try to create chances and do my defensive work as well.

“I feel like I can play anywhere in midfield, whether it’s deeper or further forward. I’m happy to do whatever and I’m good enough to do that.”

All eyes will be on what the future holds for Gallagher in the coming weeks, as it was recently reported in the national media that both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are keen on signing him.

The duo are keen to land him on loan, something that Chelsea, according to the report, would be willing to grant. However, they have no intentions of allowing him to leave on a permanent basis.
