Chelsea’s January transfer priorities as Antonio Rudiger decision made amid Jules Kounde rumours

Thomas Tuchel will be hoping that Chelsea can continue their good start to the season with reinforcements in January that could help them finish the season strong.

The Blues added striker Romelu Lukaku and midfielder Saul to their squad in the summer (as well as third choice keeper Marcus Bettinelli) and have made a great start to their campaign at the top of the table.

Despite the side’s great form, Tuchel could dip into the winter market to help bolster his squad for the second-half of the season.

football.london takes a look at areas the Blues could look into.

Centre-back

Chelsea could look into adding another centre-back to their squad, especially with uncertainty surrounding player contracts at the back. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta, who can all play at centre-back, are all out of contract at the end of the season.

With uncertainty surrounding those four players, the Blues could go back in for some targets they laid out over the summer.

Jules Kounde from Sevilla was heavily linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old impressing the Chelsea hierarchy. Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt is another young centre-back who has been linked with a move to London.

Right wing-back

With the possibility of club captain Cesar Azpilicueta leaving at the end of his contract in the summer, the Blues could look to bring in someone as competition for Reece James in the right wing-back position.

Azpilicueta has played at both wing-back and centre-back for his side this season, but if the 32-year-old were to leave it could leave James as the main and only out and out choice for the right flank.

Paris Saint-Germain left-back Achraf Hakimi revealed recently that he had an offer from the Blues in the summer, but opted to join the Ligue 1 giants instead.

Internal recruitment

Though there is a lot of focus on who Chelsea can bring in, it shouldn’t be forgotten just how good the Cobham academy is.

Whilst it is easy to recruit the finished product, the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi have learnt their trade through the club and various loan spells. Trevoh Chalobah, for example, is another who could come in and in the long-term fill that defensive void rather than spending millions on another star from elsewhere.

Where there is an opportunity for the Blues to sign someone, there is also an opportunity to embed their fantastic youth players into the team.
