Declan Rice sends message to Mason Mount after Ballon d’Or decision over Chelsea star

Declan Rice has revealed he is “proud” of his close friend Mason Mount after the Chelsea star finished 19th in the 2021 Ballon d’Or rankings.

Mount has enjoyed a fine year for the Blues – with the 22-year-old playing a star role in the club’s second-ever UEFA Champions League triumph, as well as helping his team this season as they sit top of the Premier League table after 13 matches played.

The England international also shone for his country in their Euro 2020 campaign, where the Three Lions reached the final of the major European tournament for the first time.

So, it’s no surprise that Mount has been selected in the top 20 best footballers in the world for 2021 – with the Chelsea star finishing in 19th place.

Rice, who is very close friends with Mount, took to Twitter after the decision and revealed his pride in his former academy teammate.

The West Ham United midfielder simply tweeted: “Proud (clapping emoji).”

In 2021, Mount has made himself virtually undroppable to Thomas Tuchel, who was quick to heap praise on the England midfielder, when speaking about his talents back in May of this year.

“He has the full package, mentally, in terms of talent and physically and the most important part is his character, he has his feet on the ground and he’s a nice guy,” Tuchel said on Mount.

“He comes to Cobham every day to learn something new and have new experiences. He is the guy who can recover very fast, he’s a very physical player and is fully adapted to PL football. He has big self-confidence in a very, very positive way.

“It’s a pleasure to have him, be at his side and guide him and support him. It’s impressive, he’s not affected by all the praise. This is maybe the most important part. He seems to be a guy who likes the sport, and feels an obligation to make the most out of it and he wants it absolutely badly, so it’s a top mix.”

So far this season, Mount has scored three Premier League goals – with all of them coming in the same match against Norwich City – and also registered four assists for his Chelsea teammates.

The Blues star still has a huge part to play this season under Tuchel and will be desperate to continue impressing as he looks to cement a place in the England squad for next year’s FIFA World Cup.
