Arsenal may have been handed a boost in their bid to land Olympique Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
Aouar was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer, but Arsenal eventually decided to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.
That particular deal hasn’t worked out for the Gunners just yet with Partey struggling with injury so far this season, but the Ghana international has plenty of time to prove he is worth the £45million transfer fee.
The question is whether Arsenal will circle back for Aouar this summer when Mikel Arteta will need to replace the temporary solution to the creative issues in midfield with Martin Odegaard wanted back at Real Madrid after this season.
Aouar was said to be worth around £55million in the summer, and Arsenal might be able to finally get him due to a recent boost at the expense of the midfielder’s current club Lyon.
Lyon confirmed on Wednesday that a combination in the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and a shortfall from TV rights has seen them lose almost £96million.
The French club have also lost money due to failing to qualify for the Champions League last season.
Lyon are usually a fixture in at least one of the European competitions, but they finished seventh last season and have had to cope without the financial rewards of the competitions this term.

Almost every club has felt the pinch from the pandemic, but some less than others, and Arsenal could take advantage by signing Aouar this summer, offering Lyon a cash boost they might just need.
Though, Lyon are certainly aware of Aouar’s value, standing firm over their valuation last summer, and while they might be tempted to sell in the current circumstances, they are unlikely to do a deal for a reduced price.
