Edu decides on Arsenal’s next summer signing as Manuel Locatelli issues transfer update

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Wednesday, July 14.

Locatelli addresses his future

Sassuolo and Italy midfielder Manuel Locatelli is refusing to give too much away in regards to what the future holds for him following the conclusion of the European Championship.

Following a string of fine performances at Euro 2020 for Italy, who defeated England on penalties in Sunday’s final, Locatelli has been heavily linked with a move to both Arsenal and Juventus in the past few weeks.

Locatelli is understood to be very keen on a move to Juventus as they can offer him UEFA Champions League football, but Arsenal have already lodged an “official bid” and Sassuolo chief executive Giovanni Carnevali revealed last week that the Serie A club were in talks with a non-Italian club over a sale, but would not confirm nor deny if it was Arsenal.

Nevertheless, Locatelli is remaining coy on his future.

He said: “I haven’t really thought about my next club so far, I was focused on the national team. We will see what happens.

“I support Juventus? Right now we are here for the national team, so I support Italy.”

Gunners in three-way transfer battle

Arsenal are set to go toe-to-toe with Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the race to sign Everton youngster Thierry Small.

According to The Athletic, all three aforementioned clubs have expressed an interest in the 16-year-old left-back, as uncertainty over his future at Goodison Park continues to mount.

Everton hope to offer him a new long-term contract but he has yet to report back for pre-season training, meaning that his future on Merseyside is in doubt.

Thus, Arsenal are hoping to pip United and Bayern to the 16-year-old’s signature and add another exciting prospect to their youth ranks.

Willock spent the second half of last season on loan at St James’ Park and proved to be a roaring success for Steve Bruce’s side, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances, including going on a run of scoring in six successive Premier League matches.

However, the Magpies’ chances of taking Willock back to St James’ Park are as good as over, despite it being reported that Newcastle’s hierarchy have held discussions with Arsenal about a possible deal.

However, Willock is poised to feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans, meaning Newcastle face a difficult scenario.
