Edu handed timely reminder about transfer masterstroke to sign Bernd Leno replacement at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta and Edu can revisit a long-time Arsenal transfer target if they need to replace Bernd Leno.

As previously reported by football.london, the Gunners duo will target a new back-up goalkeeper if, as expected, the Germany international leaves the club in the January transfer window.

Having lost his place in between the sticks for Arsenal‘s Premier League games to Aaron Ramsdale, Leno has hinted at bringing his time at the Emirates Stadium to an end if his situation doesn’t change.

“Only if nothing changes in my situation by winter would I have to think about things: what option do I have, how can I continue? But I’m concentrating on my work in training,” he told SportBild, via Sport Witness. “I can’t commit to anything else at the moment.”

Reports in Italy have previously claimed that Serie A giants Inter Milan have emerged as potential suitors for Leno and would have to meet Arsenal’s asking price of €15million (£12.8million) for the 29-year-old.

That would then allow the Gunners to use the windfall to sign a replacement.

And one name that immediately springs to mind is that of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana who was linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium throughout the summer transfer window.

football.london understood that Arsenal were extremely keen on the Cameroonian as a potential replacement for Leno – but there was one major sticking point that made a deal impossible to complete.

At the time, the 25-year-old was serving a one-year ban due to a doping violation which was handed to him at the end of February.

However, upon an appeal the ban was reduced, thus allowing Onana to train again after September 4, while he can now resume playing football as his suspension came to an end on November 4.

Interestingly, some Arsenal fans have already urged Arteta and Edu to renew their interest in Onana, although links have gone quiet in recent months.

With that said, now that the keeper is free to resume his playing career coupled with the possibility of Leno leaving in January just might serve as a timely reminder to the Gunners’ decision-makers.

In the summer there was talk of Onana being available for £7m.

Yet the fact his contract at Ajax expires at the end of the season means he could be available for even less in January as the Dutch giants risk losing the goalkeeper for free next summer.

This development may provide Arsenal technical director Edu with a chance to pull off a masterstroke as he could sell Leno and bring in a replacement whilst making a profit.

But with Maarten Stekelenburg ruled out for the rest of the season, Ajax have already announced that Onana will be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans going forward.

“It was clear to us that Andre would make a transfer last summer,” former Arsenal winger and Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars said. “That did not happen and so he is still under contract with us.

“My position on his situation was clear, but then the news came that Maarten Stekelenburg is out for the rest of the season. Ajax needs are paramount and from this point of view it is good that he reports to the first team again.”
