Edu has decided on Arsenal’s first summer signing as Mikel Arteta wants to seal five transfers

Andre Onana is close to becoming an Arsenal player this summer with the prospect of a deal looking positive.

Whilst a fee is yet to be agreed between the Gunners and the goalkeeper’s current employers Ajax, football.london understands that a deal is very likely to happen this summer.

Arsenal’s interest has been well known for some time with Mikel Arteta reportedly keen to bolster his goalkeeping options ahead of next season.

Bernd Leno’s future is still slightly uncertain whilst Mat Ryan has returned to Brighton & Hove Albion following his loan spell at the Emirates Stadium came to an end.

The only problem that awaits the Gunners is the fact that the Cameroon international is currently serving a 12-month ban from football due to breaking doping guidelines.

Onana has appealed that ban in an effort to get it reduced with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He maintains that his breach was an error.

“Everything was the result of a human mistake,” Onana said.

“Everyone knows that I lead a very healthy life, and since I started my sporting career, I have always been strongly against any use of doping and I condemn any unsportsmanlike conduct.

“I have no need to resort to doping to further enhance my sporting career.”

The outcome of that appeal process is set to decide how much the Gunners will be forced to pay for his signature.

As it stands, Onana cannot play until February, with his contract with Ajax set to expire next summer.

Should he have his ban upheld, it is logical that the Gunners would certainly not have to pay as much as they otherwise would have done.

The summer window is officially open, and it’s going to be tough to keep up with the comings and goings in and out of the Emirates.

Before his ban, Onana had developed the reputation of one of the most exciting young stoppers in Europe.

The 25-year-old broke through with the Dutch giants in 2016 and has gone on to make 204 appearances in the time since.

He has won two Eredivisie titles with the club and has gone on to make 18 appearances for national side Cameroon.
