‘End of!’ – Edu’s next transfer mission clear after Aubameyang miss in Arsenal loss vs Everton

Some Arsenal supporters have been left furious with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s last-gasp miss against Everton on Monday night.

The Gunners‘ captain dropped to the bench for the clash at Goodison Park, with Alexandre Lacazette coming into the side instead of his team-mate.

Speaking to Sky Sports before the game, Mikel Arteta revealed that the thinking behind the decision was to “freshen” things up for his side at Goodison Park.

Arteta said: “We made some changes today, we have to freshen up. We have some games coming up and I want to have everyone fit and available.”

That did not really work for the visitors on Merseyside, though, despite going 1-0 up through Martin Odegaard. Arsenal never looked at their best going forward at Goodison.

As mentioned above, Odegaard struck the Gunners into the lead on the verge of half-time after Richarlison had a goal disallowed for offside.

The Brazilian then saw another goal chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee, but he eventually saw one stand after heading the ball over Aaron Ramsdale for the equaliser – that had been coming.

Eddie Nketiah then had a glorious opportunity to put the visiting side back ahead, but the Arsenal striker could only find the post with a free header at the back post.

Then, Demarai Gray made Arsenal pay for the miss with a sublime finish from the edge of the box in stoppage time.

It looked to be all over for the Gunners, but Aubameyang, who came on in the second-half for the visitors, had a fantastic chance to level the match with one of the final kicks of the match, but failed to hit the target from close range.

Arsenal fans, when taking to Twitter after the miss, made their feelings perfectly clear – with some telling the club what they need to do when the January transfer window opens in less than a month.

Aubameyang has only scored four Premier League goals so far this season, despite Arteta insisting that his disappointing campaign last time out was only a fluke.

The Gunners boss said this to Sky Sports on Aubameyang in August: “Absolutely I do (think it was a one-off season) because he’s done it his whole career.

“Last year was a really special context for a player to go through. There were a lot of things he had to go through both professionally and in his private life.

“We are trying to give all the help and support we can to make him happy – which I think is a really important word for him – in order to perform, to flow, and to play with confidence and do what he has always done.”

The defeat for Arsenal means they miss the chance to climb nearer the top four, with the Gunners down in seventh and four points below West Ham United in fourth.

Next up for the north Londoners is a home clash with Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon before welcoming West Ham to the Emirates Stadium just a few days later.
