England player ratings vs Austria: Bukayo Saka superb, Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish impress

Jordan Pickford

Had little to do in the first half with Austria struggling to muster an attempt on goal. Stopped his Everton teammate Ben Godfrey putting the ball through his own net in the second half and couldn’t quite take in Marcel Sabizter’s swerving effort. 6

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Got the nod at right-back ahead of Kieran Trippier and almost made the perfect start to the game but his shot was saved by Daniel Bachmann. Played well but went off injured in the final few minutes to give Gareth Southgate a scare. 7

Conor Coady

Quiet first half but had more to do after the break as Austria pushed on looking for a goal. Steady performance at the back. 6

Tyrone Mings

Great block on Christoph Baumgartner right at the end of the first half just as he looked about to score but maybe lucky to still be on the pitch after an off-the-ball challenge in the area on Sasa Kalajdzic. 6

Kieran Trippier

Operating at left-back with Alexander-Arnold deployed on the opposite flank and put in some good corners for the team to attack. Not his natural side but did well. 7

Declan Rice

Did his job as usual in midfield as he kept the ball ticking over and put himself about to frustrate the Austrian side. 7

Jude Bellingham

First England start for the Borussia Dortmund man and had a header saved inside the first five minutes following Trippier’s corner. Really bright bits of play at times and always looked to get forward to help. Minutes in the Euros could well come his way. 8

Jack Grealish

Looked to cause problems for the visitors and found himself fouled a number of times in the first half. Got better as the game wore on and maybe would have scored had Sabitzer not got his foot in seconds before Bukayo Saka found the net. Did his Euro chances no harm at all. 8

Jesse Lingard

Handed a start despite his omission from the 26-man squad for the Euros and was bright on the right flank. Played his part in the opening goal of the night as he looked to play in Grealish only for it to fall kindly to Saka. Got 60 minutes of action under his belt. 7

Bukayo Saka

Really good run at Stefan Lainer down the left flank early on and in the wars a couple of times. Had a chance on goal on 20 minutes but his volley flashed over the crossbar as he couldn’t keep it down. However, got the goal his performance deserved just before the hour mark as he finished from close range. Superb. 9

Harry Kane

Picked Alexander-Arnold out with a lovely ball inside the opening five minutes that saw the Liverpool man go close. Went close himself later in the first half but was subbed on the hour mark. 7
