England player ratings vs Romania: Ward-Prowse and Grealish superb, Sancho impresses in win

Sam Johnstone

Handed his England debut between the sticks and saved from Razvan Marin early on, before denying Sorescue Deian Cristian prior to the break with a strong foot. Pulled an even better one out of the bag in the final 20 minutes as he denied Andrei Ivan from point-blank range with a sublime save. 7

Ben Godfrey

Named in the England XI for the first time after his cameo off the bench in midweek against Austria. Got himself in the box in the first half only to slice his effort wide and always looked to get forward when given the chance. A solid debut. 6

Ben White

Another to be handed his full England debut and was strong at the back. Didn’t have so much to do at times with England dominating but impressed when called into action. 6

Tyrone Mings

Didn’t start the match too well after giving away a corner after failing to control a simple pass. Quiet at times due to England’s dominance but solid enough throughout. 6

Luke Shaw

Back in the England team after linking up with the squad late following his participation in the Europa League final. Had a couple of good runs down the left early on and linked up well with Marcus Rashford. 7

Kalvin Phillips

Lovely pass in the 11th minute to pick out Jadon Sancho’s run and sprayed the ball about when in possession. Only on for 45 minutes but played well in his time on the pitch. 6

James Ward-Prowse

Given the opportunity to catch Gareth Southgate’s eye after missing out on the 26-man squad and used the ball extremely well throughout, including on 30 minutes when Dominic Calvert-Lewin met his inswinging free-kick. Superb both on and off the ball and swung in some excellent set pieces. Outstanding in his 65 minutes on the pitch. 9

Jadon Sancho

On the ball a lot and went so close to the opener after hitting the crossbar with a curling effort after teaming up well with Jack Grealish. Linked up well with his teammates throughout and more than made his case ahead of next week’s opener against Croatia. 8

Jack Grealish

Started brightly in a central role and always looked to cause the visitors plenty of problems. Teamed up well for Sancho’s fine effort in the first half and won the penalty after the break for Rashford to convert. Another really good showing to give his boss something to think about ahead of Croatia. 9

Marcus Rashford

Captain on the day with Harry Kane named on the bench and gave Deian Cristian a torrid time down the left. Played well and got a goal to his name after converting from the penalty spot. 8

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Barley had a sniff inside the opening 30 minutes but went close to the opener with a brilliant header from just inside the area that struck the crossbar. Had a chance from close range just after the break but it was saved by Florin Nita and later won the penalty that Jordan Henderson missed. 7

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson (Kalvin Phillips, 46)

First appearance since Liverpool’s Merseyside derby loss against Everton in February as he got some much-needed minutes under his belt. Missed from the penalty spot late on. 4
