Erling Haaland agrees with Timo Werner about Robert Lewandowski as Chelsea eye £50m transfer

Chelsea have held discussions with the agent of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as they step up their search to land a new goal-getter.

The Blues, who are poised to participate in a pre-season friendly on Thursday against an unconfirmed opponent, are desperate to add a new striker to their ranks this summer to increase their attacking output.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel, who is yet to make a single signing since landing the Chelsea job back in January, has made it his top mission to add a striker to his ranks, even though he also has aspirations to add to other areas of his squad.

Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland has cemented himself at the very top of Chelsea’s transfer wish list, with the Norway international having been linked heavily with a move to Stamford Bridge since December.

However, despite Chelsea’s eagerness to add him to their ranks, their pursuit of him, certainly so far, is not really getting them anywhere, with Dortmund determined to retain his services and avoid the prospect of losing, even though they would attract a much higher fee for him this summer than 12 months down the line when his release clause comes into effect.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are willing to keep their options open and keep tabs on other potential solutions, one of whom is Bayern Munich star Lewandowski. It was reported over the weekend that Chelsea were lining up a £50million bid for his services and were hopeful that they could reach an agreement with Dortmund.

Now, according to reports in Germany, the Blues, who will face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, have held talks with the striker’s agent – Pini Zahavi – about the prospect of landing him. It is also claimed that the numbers Chelsea are offering are ‘interesting’ the Lewandowski camp.

Should Chelsea make a breakthrough in regards to their chase for Lewandowski, some supporters, most likely, will feel a little deflated that the Blues have signed him and not Haaland, with the latter tipped by many to soon become one of the greatest players on the planet.

However, Lewandowski is one of the very best strikers in the world right now, and knows how to score goals at a consistent rate of knots.

As well as that, if Chelsea were to sign him it would also earn rave reviews from Haaland, who waxed lyrical about his Bundesliga Golden Boot rival not all that long ago.

Speaking earlier this year, Haaland said: “Robert Lewandowski is crazy. It’s just crazy. When I score a goal I always think ‘one goal closer to him’ and then he just scores a hat-trick again, like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

“What he does is crazy. He’s crazy. I can learn a lot from him.

“First of all he is technically very strong and also in game building.”

Haaland is not the only striker to have previously waxed lyrical about Lewandowski’s talents, with current Chelsea frontman Timo Werner having also experienced what it is like to be in a goal-scoring battle with the Poland international.

Prior to joining Chelsea last June, Werner often battled away with Lewandowski in the race for the Golden Boot and struggled to keep up with the Pole’s talents.

“You can’t score every game unless your name is Robert Lewandowski,” Werner joked last year. “When I score two in Berlin, he scores two against Dortmund and I ask myself when he’ll stop.

“He’s currently in the same category as [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi.”

With that in mind, it is clear that Lewandowski’s talents are massively appreciated by his colleagues.

He is a player that was born to score goals, and even at 32 he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Admittedly, Haaland would no doubt attract more excitement, but landing Lewandowski could prove to be a wise decision made by Chelsea if they manage to pull it off.
