What is the latest team news, do you have players back from injury?
Yeah, [Rodrigo] Bentancur is available. The same for Lucas Moura. For Skipp and Tanganga, they’re still not available. We have to wait.
What do you make of Roman Abramovich putting Chelsea up for sale?
My reaction, it’s very strange. He was the owner for many years and Chelsea in this period they won a lot of trophies. For sure, it was an amazing period of Abramovich for Chelsea.
Now I’m listening that he wants to sell the club. For sure, it’s not good news for Chelsea fans, especially for what he did in this period that he was the owner.
You seemed to be less angry after the Middlesbrough defeat, you were smiling, than you were after Burnley, some fans were worried about your reaction, what do you think of the job you have to do here in the summer?
My reaction was that I was disappointed and frustrated for the result. For sure, to have this up and down I don’t like. I always said this from my first day when I arrived.
Tottenham’s story is this, many ups and downs, but to be competitive, to try to win something, to try to fight for something important and become a strong team, the first thing that has to happen is to be stable and avoid these ups and downs.
To do this and to change this type of situation that is happening for many, many years in Tottenham, it’s not simple. In a short time it’s impossible to do this, not only for me but I think for any manager or coach to come in and change the story in one second.
Especially when this club for 20 years has this type of situation. For sure, sometimes you have to be upset. I think it’s normal to be angry when we lost. One thing is to be angry when we lose and another thing is to speak about my reaction and emotion. They are two different situations.
To avoid this situation, I try to keep every time the same behaviour, the same way to face this press conference. I think it’s normal sometimes you’re angry and other times you can face the situation in a different way. But for sure we have to be disappointed. Me, the players and the club because we got eliminated by Middlesbrough.
It’s a pity because FA Cup could have been a target for us, in our minds at least to keep us focussed and concentrated on our target. And now we have only the second part of the season to play.
What has been the mood in the training ground?
On training ground the commitment is always very high. I said to you before, it’s not enough to have only a good commitment during training. You arrive at a point during the game when you to put something more than commitment.
What do you make of Everton under Frank Lampard?
A good game for us, in the right moment. On Monday. We are having the right time to prepare the game and for sure from now until the rest of the season, the only positive thing is we can have more days to prepared for the game. In the past when we had more time to prepare we had good results.
We know we’re facing a good team and a new manager. Everton decided to send away Rafa Benitez who in my opinion is a good and important manager. I have great respect for him. Now there’s Frank Lampard, and he’s showing that he can do this job very well. In his last two experiences he did well with Derby and with Chelsea. Monday will be a tough game for both teams.
The club policy has always been to sign young players but is that causing the inconsistency, do you need some experienced signings in the summer?
I think the most important thing is to be focused on the present. It’s very important the present, than the future. Now we have to sort the situation to avoid until the end of the season these ups and downs.
Because the players and I, we want to try to finish in the best position possible in the table, and then we’ll see, I repeat, we will see.
Now, it’s too important to be focussed on the present in the last 13 games. Because I repeat we want to try to finish in best possible position in the end of the season. And then, we can speak about many topics, about experience or no experience, but now it is very important to be focused on the present.
Has Sergio Reguilon been having any Covid after-effects?
He had COVID, I think he had a bit of a problem to recover from this, but Sergio knows very well he has to fight to play, because also there is at this moment Sessegnon, that is playing regularly, he is having good performances. We have four wing-backs, with Doherty and Emerson, and also during the game, sometimes if I want to try to push the game I can put in this position also Kulusevski.
There are four players and every game I try to decide for the best for the team , to make the best decision. There are not players stable to play every game, I can play Sessegnon, I can play Reguilon, I can play Doherty, I can play Emerson, it depends on the training session.
Not only in these roles, but in every role. From now until the end, we have to try to get the best from the players. It is not to the time to wait for anybody. The players that are in good form, they play. The others, they are on the bench, or in the stands.
From the latest transfer news to those glorious wins in north London and beyond! There might even be a laugh or two too.
Is Oliver Skipp close to returning?
Oliver Skipp… it is a pity i think in England that sometimes you should have a conference with the medical department. The doctors, it is too easy for the doctors to work here, because they don’t speak, they don’t explain what happens, you understand?
Sometimes I think that could be good, one day, if in two weeks, to have a good press conference with the medical department to explain about the situation of the players, about the situation that they are trying to take care of their players. It is too easy for the medical department in England, I think so.
Do you have a timeline for him?
He’s not ready, he’s having this problem with groin pain, and is fighting and he could recover before but maybe something was wrong, and now we have to wait.
