Former Arsenal star makes big Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claim after Tottenham absence

Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant says that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not a leader on the pitch for the Gunners.

Aubameyang was dropped from the Arsenal side to face Tottenham in the North London derby after arriving late to the stadium.

Arteta said at the time that the issue had been dealt with internally, and the striker returned to the starting line up for the Europa League win over Olympiacos.

Aubameyang has scored just nine goals in 24 appearances in the league this season, with three of those coming in one game against Leeds in February.

Pennant says that the striker was elected as captain due to his on-field prowess for the Gunners, and when he is not firing on the field his off-pitch behaviour is not helping his cause.

“He got the band, the captaincy on his performance in previous seasons due to scoring a lot of goals, being a fan favourite and the struggles Arsenal were going through,” Pennant told talkSPORT.

“I feel that’s why he got given the captaincy band, not because he’s a leader off the pitch.

“I don’t think he’s a leader on the pitch. He scored goals, and led by example.

“Now he’s not scoring, he’s turning up late, he’s getting dropped. As a captain you shouldn’t be doing that.

“I’m gonna throw this in there because he led by example. Steven Gerard. You would never see Steven being late, you’d never see him getting dropped for any misdemeanours off the field or on the field.”
