Gary Lineker has mercilessly mocked Arsenal amid their defeat away to Newcastle that has handed bitter rivals Tottenham the advantage in the race to seal a Champions League spot.
At such a pivotal point of the season, a turgid performance in N17 last week was followed up by another lacklustre display at St. James’ Park as Eddie Howe and the Toon brought the Gunners crashing back to reality. Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes ended up putting the daggers in Arsenal hearts as they need to now rely on a massive favour from already relegated Norwich City if they are to achieve mission impossible at this final stage of 2021/22.
That scenario at Carrow Road on May 22 in conjunction with Arteta’s side getting the better of Everton and potentially relegating Chelsea icon Frank Lampard in the process would be the only way now that Champions League football could be achieved from the jaws of death.
It seems highly unlikely at this late point with all factors taken into consideration that Arsenal can achieve what nobody is expecting at this point but it is the Premier League, so who knows what could happen.
“They (Spurs) need a point…They’ve [Arsenal] not recovered from Thursday night and it’ll be a struggle for them to recover from tonight for Sunday. Either Everton will be free or safe or Everton will be desperate. Arsenal, it is a problem a real problem,” Gary Neville admitted on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game.
Lineker added to Arsenal fans’ misery with his own assessment and being a former Lilywhites icon, his message certainly did rub well with the Arsenal contingent who will be hurting and numb after they relinquish the power of their own top-four destiny this late on.
He tweeted: “Arsenal have gone all Spursy.”
