Arsenal fans were on a transfer scouting mission during the latest round of Champions League group phase fixtures.
Despite a busy summer for the Gunners as manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu were able to bring in as many as six players whilst spending close to £150million, one can argue that the first-team squad still is not complete.
In recent seasons, there has been an alarming lack of goalscoring contributions from Arsenal ‘s midfield players in particular.
Last year Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey, Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka managed four goals between them across all competitions, whilst the more creative players such as Willian, Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard (during his loan spell) managed seven in total.
To Smith Rowe’s credit, he has discovered a taste for scoring goals – with five in all competitions so far this season – and could reach double figures if he continues at the rate he’s going at.
But if the likes of Partey, Odegaard and Albert Sambi Lokonga are unable to chip in with a fair share of goals to ensure the Gunners have a successful campaign then the club may have to dip into the transfer market.
Meanwhile, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah set to depart when their contracts expire next June, it’s already clear that Arteta and Edu must prioritise a new striker in 2022.
Amid links to the likes of Dusan Vlahovic, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Karim Adeyemi, it could be a sign that the Gunners duo are planning to bolster the forward line very soon.
With that said, some Arsenal fans are hoping to lend a helping hand to Arteta and Edu in terms of which striker and midfielder to target in the upcoming transfer windows.
If Gunners scouts were in attendance for Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 Champions League defeat at the hands of Sporting CP on Wednesday evening, they would have noticed that the Bundesliga giants have been eliminated from the group stage.
Therefore, Marco Rose’s side will be playing in the Europa League when European competitions resume in the new year.
Whilst this is unlikely to force the club into selling their best players anytime soon, some Arsenal fans think Dortmund dropping out of the Champions League should convince Arteta and Edu to plot an ambitious double raid to sign Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.
