Chelsea fans were yet again left impressed with the outstanding and mature performance shown by Billy Gilmour on the international stage in Scotland’s important 3-2 win over Israel in the World Cup qualifiers.
Gilmour, 20, has lifted off on the world stage since the 0-0 draw at Euro 2020 for Steve Clarke’s men against the Three Lions.
The experience of playing in such big competitions at a very young age has only helped the current Norwich City midfielder take his game to the next level, which is a real bonus for Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea who rate the player very highly.
Before his loan move went through in the summer to the current Premier League strugglers, Tuchel insisted that Gilmour was a key member of his squad, therefore hinting at a future role for the former Rangers man.
“It’s absolutely no mistake. It was unfortunately not his choice, it was my choice,” said the Blues boss when asked if denying Gilmour a January loan was an error.
“The choice was made for Chelsea and not for the personal goals of Billy. He accepted it in a five-minute talk, he had no problem with it.
“I actually hope he knows how much I appreciate him as a person and as a footballer.”
On last night’s game, Gilmour played a significant role in the Tartan Army’s tight win over Israel as he won a penalty and created one big chance during the 90 minutes.
The resulting penalty was missed right on the stroke of half-time by QPR striker Lyndon Dykes.
Another moment that stood out for Chelsea fans was his ‘Hazard-esque’ run through the Israel defence that nearly resulted in a goalscoring opportunity.
Here was the best reaction on social media from fans of the west London club and his home nation to Saturday night’s showing.
