Here We Go: Five transfer targets to watch in January window, including Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The January transfer window in football is mere days from opening as teams shift their attentions on intriguing possibilities and deals focused on immediate needs. The mid-season market is always a situational one that depends on the outlook of a club or a player. That’s why you have some major clubs in Europe competing for players who may be available exclusively on the transfer market to either solidify their championship chances or save them from relegation. You also have other clubs are looking ahead to next summer, keen on signing potential free-agent deals in 2022 that can be negotiated right now.

So what are the biggest opportunities on the market right now? Pay particular attention to these five names for the next few weeks:

1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The situation with Arsenal is now very tense as Aubameyang is no longer training with the team after he was stripped of the captaincy. There are no plans for this to change over the next few weeks as he continues to train alone. While this might be an opportunity for clubs looking for a striker, the problem with Aubameyang is that he comes with an extremely high salary. In the summer, he was offered to Juventus who refused the proposal. What will happen now? Meanwhile, Arsenal are already looking for a new No. 9 either in January or summer of 2022.

2. André Onana

There is no doubt that the Cameroonian goalkeeper will leave Ajax as a free agent. Despite his statements about Barcelona, the deal will be concluded with Inter who already have an agreement with Onana for a four-year contract. The signatures on the contracts will happen in January once players at the end of their current deal are officially permitted to sign their next contract. However, Onana will only officially arrive to his new club in June 2022 for the new season.

3. Dean Henderson

The backup goalkeeper for Manchester United is not happy with the current minutes allotted. After a couple of down years, David de Gea is back to doing extraordinary things and because of that, Henderson, despite having always been professional and respectful, is ready to leave the club as early as January if the right opportunities present themselves in hopes of more playing time. There are no negotiations with Ajax at the moment, but if no offers arrive in January, Henderson would be in the same when June 2022 arrives as well.

4. Xavi Simons

At only 18 years of age, Simons is one of the most interesting talents in Europe and there’s so much potential for this prospect who grew up in La Masia as prospect of the Barcelona academy. He’s now at Paris Saint-Germain where his contract expires in June 2022. The French club has had an offer on the table for a new deal since last July, but Simons will only sign if PSG guarantees him a place in the first team. Otherwise, he could look for greener pastures as a free agent. His agent Mino Raiola was clear with club director Leonardo. Watch out for different clubs from different countries who are already aware of the situation.

5. Antonio Rudiger

There is still no agreement for Rudiger to renew his contract with Chelsea as he has not been convinced by the current offer in place from the English club thus far. He wants a bigger contract or will seriously consider leaving the club as a free agent in June. Tottenham are not a realistic possibility, but Real Madrid and PSG have already asked for information on Rudiger. Bayern Munich have also inquired about the situation, but they will not pay the salary that the defender would like. Keep an eye on what happens in the next few weeks.
