Inter Milan drop transfer hint that could be good news for Spurs over Lautaro Martinez

Tottenham are in the midst of a busy summer transfer window as footballing director Fabio Paratici looks to bring in players that will help fire the north London club back into the top four next season.

The Lilywhites have failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in each of the last two seasons and Spurs’ new boss Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping to end that run this term, having already signed three first-team players in recent weeks.

The former Wolves manager has brought in Italian goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on a season-long loan, with Spanish playmaker Bryan Gil and Argentine centre-half Cristian Romero both joining on a permanent basis.

Tottenham are also reportedly on the hunt for a striker to support Harry Kane this month after Brazilian youngster Carlos Vinicius’ loan expired at the end of last season.

Fiorentina frontman Dusan Vlahovic had been linked with a switch to the English capital to join Tottenham, but it is Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez who has been mooted as a potential target in recent weeks as understands that Spurs saw a bid in excess of £50million accepted for the Argentine earlier this week.

However, that bid had been accepted before Chelsea’s pursuit of Martinez’s strike partner Romelu Lukaku reached advanced stages, making the Lilywhites move for Martinez considerably more complicated.

The Nerazzurri have been chasing Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata as a replacement in recent days, according to a number of reports from the Italian media, but journalist Fabrizio Romano has also claimed that the current Serie A champions are also close to signing Roma centre-forward Edin Dzeko, having agreed on personal terms with the veteran Bosnian international.

Despite Romano claiming that Inter are keen on keeping Martinez, their pursuit of two strikers makes this seem less likely, especially when you take into account that the Italian giants are currently enduring considerable financial troubles.

The Argentine would be a huge coup for Spurs considering he bagged a whopping 19 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last term, numbers that read even more impressive when you consider he is still just 23-years-old.

Still, the skilful forward’s agent has dealt the north London side a blow in their pursuit of his client, claiming that Martinez is currently happy at the San Siro.

“Lautaro is an Inter player and is happy in Italy. The renewal? Lautaro is from Inter, he will never enter into conflict with the club. Never, this is reality,” Camano told FCInter1908.

“Lautaro Martinez is happy at Inter and in Italy. His decision is to stay. The relationship with Inter is perfect. Lautaro Martinez is calm. Yes, it is true that there were offers, but today he is fine and we will sit down to talk about the future.”
