Ivan Toney and three other Brentford players nominated for Fans Footballer of the Year award

After so many near misses, 2021 was the year Brentford finally achieved the dream and reached the pinnacle of English football with promotion to the Premier League.

Victory over Swansea in the 2020-21 Championship play-off final saw the Bees go up, and life could not have started better in the Premier League.

An opening day visit from one of the Premier League’s biggest club was the perfect way to christen the Brentford Community Stadium with a resounding victory against Arsenal.

So, with plenty for Bees fans to celebrate this year, football.london wants to know who fans think has been the Footballer of the Year.

With that in mind, we asked our Brentford expert Uzzi Majid to name four nominees for the award and here is what he had to say.

Ivan Toney:

It’s been some 12 months for Brentford’s talisman. Not only did he win the golden boot last season, he did so in emphatic style which is extremely impressive given it was his first season at Championship level. He has been very influential in all of Brentford’s matches this season. His hold-up play and willingness to defend at the other end makes him stand out and with a bit more luck, his goal tally will gradually increase.

Christian Norgaard:

Without doubt Brentford’s best midfielder by a country mile, the Dane has been an ever-present in the heart of the Bees’ midfield and many would have a strong case to say he has been their best player this season. He scored his first ever goal for the club on that famous night against Arsenal on the opening day of the season and he has been a revelation since. Before the game against Liverpool, his boss and compatriot Thomas Frank said that he would fit in at the Reds and that if he replaced Fabinho, there would not be much difference which is quite the compliment.

Vitaly Janelt:

The German was signed for a snipe of £500,000 and he has been worth every single penny since his arrival last season. Coincidentally, he signed before Norgaard suffered an ankle injury that kept him out for a long period of time but he was a revelation in place of the Dane and has been superb in Brentford’s debut Premier League season so far. He does have a goal to his name, with that memorable header against Liverpool in that 3-3 draw.

Rico Henry:

Another one of Brentford’s fine performers, Rico Henry has taken life in the top flight like a duck to water. An ever-present so far, he has come up against the likes of Adama Traore and Mo Salah, and has held his own. His contract runs out at the end of next season and it is massively imperative Brentford keep hold of him.

So, whoever your choice of the four is, be sure to get your vote in and have your say in the commnents to get the debate going.

Results will be announced on Monday December 20th, so stay tuned to football.london and be sure to follow on social media to make sure you’re the first to know.
