Jose Mourinho has labelled Tottenham youngster Dane Scarlett as “phenomenal” and tipped him to star for England in the future.
Coming to the attention of the experienced head coach last summer as the 17-year-old was given his opportunity in pre-season, Scarlett then made his senior bow off the bench in the Europa League against Ludogorets.
Subsequently going on to make his Premier League debut in the home win against West Brom and later registering an assist in the 4-0 demolition of Wolfsberger AC, Mourinho did claim after the European win that the striker would be with him in the first team on a permanent basis in 2021/22.
On the back of England’s Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy, Mourinho was discussing the talented youngsters who Gareth Southgate has at his disposal and mentioned that Scarlett is one for the future for the Three Lions and Tottenham.
“Mason Greenwood was not in the Euros squad but could be there at the next World Cup, when he will be much more mature. He has the talent, but it may depend on what happens at his club,” said Mourinho in his column in The Times.
“At Manchester United they have Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Greenwood. If one has an amazing season, does that mean another is not starting so many matches?
“With Bukayo Saka, he will be an even more fundamental player for Arsenal, but in what position? I like a left-footer on the right wing but Arsenal have other choices such as Willian and Nicolas Pepe, so only Mikel Arteta, the manager, knows how Saka is going to play.
“I know he’s still very young, just 17, and it is probably too early for the next World Cup, but Tottenham Hotspur have a striker in Dane Scarlett, who, if everything goes well, is going to be phenomenal.
“For England, there is lots of promise.”
