Liverpool’s recruitment team intend to keep a close eye on Olympiacos midfielder Aguibou Camara, sources close to the Greek side have confirmed to CBS Sports.

Camara first caught the eye of Liverpool scouts in a Europa League match against Fenerbahce, a 3-0 win in which the youngster excelled, and they subsequently observed him in the Super League clash with Panathanaikos, the so-called derby of the eternal enemies. Representatives for Jurgen Klopp’s side are expected to make more frequent trips to Athens over the coming weeks as they evaluate the suitability of the 20-year-old and assess whether he could make the transition from Greece to the Premier League.

Camara made his professional debut with Lille in France last season before moving to Olympiacos in the summer. He has made 10 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing an assist. Liverpool’s interest remains at a formative stage, certainly some way from materialising into a serious bid, instead he is a player on whom they will keep a close eye in coming weeks.

Liverpool have done business with the Greek champions previously, signing Kostas Tsimikas in the summer of 2020. Though the Greek international took time to get going early in his Premier League career he has proven to be a solid contributor early in his second season.

Camara’s former manager at Lille, Christophe Galtier, said of the youngster last season: “I find him, …, having a certain personality in the game he doesn’t lose a lot of balls, he’s solid on his supports, and also versatile because he can play right or left. He is someone who quickly prints what is asked of him and corrects his mistakes so quickly.”
