Lucas Torreira’s one-word Instagram message amid Arsenal decision for potential £18m windfall

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is back in London. But for how long?

The Uruguay international is somewhat of a forgotten man at the Emirates Stadium, but after failing to earn a permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid after a somewhat disappointing loan spell last season, he remains a Gunners player.

However, he did not play a single minute of pre-season, nor was he involved against Brentford as Arsenal’s 2021/22 Premier League season began with a 2-0 defeat last Friday.

This was due to Torreira‘s involvement at this summer’s Copa America as he was given extra time off to recuperate after helping his nation reach the quarter-final stage.

Although, it has taken him a while to report back to Arsenal’s training base at London Colney ahead of the new season.

And with good reason too.

As confirmed by government guidelines for the coronavirus, because Uruguay are on the red list for the UK, Torreira had to travel via another country to avoid being stuck quarantining in a hotel for 10 days.

Therefore, the Instagram photo of him in Madrid was because Spain is a country where he could train until he’s free to travel to England and reunite with his Arsenal teammates.

That period is now over and Torreira took to Instagram on Thursday to post another image – this time of him in London.

‘Londres’ which translates to ‘London’ was Torreira’s one-word message as he looked in good shape in what appeared to be his home gym instead of the London Colney training ground.

With that said, despite returning to the UK, the midfielder won’t be featuring for Arsenal this season.

football.london understands that Torreira has been told that he’s not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans and that is after the midfielder had earlier expressed his desire to compete for a place in the Arsenal midfield.

The transfer window is in full swing and things are beginning to ramp up with Edu and Mikel Arteta’s dealings at the Emirates.

In terms of potential destinations, Serie A duo Roma and Lazio are both interested in signing the former Sampdoria man on loan, although a decision has not yet been made on which club he will join.

Valued at £18million on transfermarkt, that would have been a welcome windfall that could help the Gunners for the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Although, Arsenal – like many others – have struggled to sell fringe players due to financial challenges from the pandemic, so getting £18m for Torreira was always going to be difficult.
