Man City send Champions League message to Chelsea after Premier League title is confirmed

Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the fifth time.

Pep Guardiola’s men claimed the title that has been within their grasp for weeks, without touching a ball.

The Citizens were crowned winners of the 2020/21 Premier League after rivals Manchester United were beaten 2-1 at home by Leicester City on Tuesday night.

With City all-but confirmed as champions, United boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer decided to rest a number of key players for the game against the Foxes, having played on Sunday and with a grudge match with Liverpool to come on Thursday.

And the Foxes took full advantage, claiming a 2-1 win that puts them firmly in control of their own Champions League destiny this season.

After Liverpool romped to the title last season, ending City’s run of back-to-back titles, City are back on top this time around, with Guardiola’s men likely to be installed as favourites to win it again next season.

Chelsea will be hoping to have some say in that though, having undergone an impressive transformation under Thomas Tuchel in the second half of this season.

Tuchel has already guided the Blues into the Champions League final, where they will coincidentally meet Man City in just under three weeks’ time, although no one is sure where just yet, and the German will be hoping to challenge for both big accolades next season.

Chelsea congratulated City on their title triumph on Tuesday night, sending a message on Twitter which read: “Congratulations @ManCity, worthy 2020/21 @premierleague winners.”

And City responded in kind, with a nod to their upcoming meeting in the Champions League final on May 29.

The City response read: “Thank you! See you on the 29th!”

City will, of course, be aiming to complete a historic double.

But Tuchel has already got the better of Guardiola twice since arriving in England and will be out to make it three in a row to guide Chelsea to the one trophy City and Guardiola covet above all others.
