Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is ruled out of his side’s clash with Brighton on Sunday night after the Frenchman appears to have aggravated a re-occurring knee injury while away on international duty.
The 25-year-old was hauled off midway through France’s 2-0 win away at Kazakhstan after receiving treatment on his knee, a knock which has left him unavailable for selection as United take on Graham Potter’s Brighton side.
There are fears at Old Trafford that Martial’s injury may leave him facing a lengthy spell on the side-lines well beyond just the Brighton clash, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conceding the striker may be out of action for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.
The United boss told BT Sport: “Unfortunately, he sprained his knee with France. It’s always when they go away on internationals… you can keep your fingers crossed and hope they come back fit.
“Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing, especially when reports from there [France] was that it wasn’t anything serious but it looks a bad one.”
It has been a mixed season for Martial, with the forward sitting third in Manchester United’s top scorers charts, despite notching just seven in 36 appearances.
Though his absence will be damaging, United will still be fairly confident of their Champions League prospects.
Solskjaer’s side are currently comfortable in second, with a six-point gap over Chelsea in fourth.
Their cushion is extended to eight points over Tottenham, who spurned the chance to go fourth on goal difference after drawing 2-2 at Newcastle.
