Manchester City fans will have an unusual new snack option when they return to Etihad Stadium for their first Premier League home game of the 2021-22 season, with the club announcing the introduction of “edible coffee cups”.
The champions unveiled a host of new food and drink options ahead of the game against Norwich City this weekend, saying it was part of a drive to increase the amount of locally sourced catering at their home ground, and to cut down on environmental waste.
In among the promise of local food and artisan beer, however, was the striking announcement of a suggested new way to cut down on rubbish – “just eat your cup!” – but that supporters would not be forced to ingest their coffee cups if they don’t want to.

In an announcement on the club website , Man City said: “For the first time on campus, an ‘edible coffee cup’ will also be introduced. This fantastic and innovative solution provides an amazing solution to waste, just eat your cup!
“These will be trailed alongside our full barista service of hot drinks outside the stadium in City Square.
“Fans will have the option to put these cups into our composting waste stream, if preferred.”
What is an edible coffee cup?
While Man City provide no details as to what the edible coffee cups will be made of, they will likely be produced from waffle or biscuit-type food, similar to an ice-cream cone.
The use of these cups forms part of a commitment by City to cut down on plastic waste, with the club also announcing that beer will be served in paper cups from this weekend’s game against Norwich onwards.
They also announced partnerships with four craft breweries from the Manchester area, and seven local food outlets.
City fans will be hoping to enjoy their coffee – cup and all – while watching their team recover from a disappointing opening day, after they lost 1-0 away to Tottenham last weekend.
