It may no longer be the titanic tussle at the top of the Premier League that it used to be but Manchester United vs. Arsenal is rarely anything less than a highlight of the fixture list. This season it is shaping up to be rather more like a battle for a fourth place finish rather than anything more substantial but for both those sides that is a prize worth fighting for.

Arsenal, level on points with West Ham in fourth, can probably head to Old Trafford knowing a draw would do fine but for United the rot has to stop soon with just one win to their name in their last eight Premier League games. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know:

Storylines

Manchester United: The appointment of Ralf Rangnick until the end of the season was announced on Monday but United will need an interim to the interim manager for a while yet with the German unable to conclude his work permit process in time for Thursday’s game. Instead it will be Michael Carrick taking charge for the third time after beating Villarreal and drawing with Chelsea.

“Michael has communicated this to players and staff at Carrington in a busy week for the club,” United said. “Preparation is continuing for the visit of the in-form Gunners.”

Arsenal: Though a heavy defeat to Liverpool was a harsh reminder of where Arsenal are compared to the Premier League’s best three teams Mikel Arteta might feel that a 2-0 win over Newcastle offered further indications that his team could end the season the best of the rest. This would be the game to show it.

The Gunners will go into it sweating over the fitness of Bukayo Saka after he limped out of Saturday’s win and with Granit Xhaka and Sead Kolasinac sidelined. Saka’s absence would certainly be keenly felt, not least because of Nicolas Pepe’s stuttering form this season. Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench to score at the weekend but as more of a forward than wide option can he be trusted with the defensive work at Old Trafford?

Prediction

Arsenal have an impressive recent record against United and should be trusted to hold out for a point at Old Trafford. PICK: Manchester United 1 Arsenal 1
