Chelsea are reportedly set to renew their interest in ex-Manchester United man Sergio Romero amid a search for a new goalkeeper.
It has previously been reported that Thomas Tuchel is keen to bolster his goalkeeping options at Stamford Bridge, despite Edouard Mendy having performed excellently in his debut season in west London.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is yet to fully convince as a number one and has been linked with an exit this summer, whilst fellow back-up option Willy Caballero has departed following the expiry of his contract.
In the meantime, the Blues have been rumoured to be considering a number of free agent options including former Fulham man Marcus Bettineli, and Welsh stopper Wayne Hennessey – who has now signed a deal with Premier League rivals Burnley.
That has forced Chelsea to look elsewhere and they could reportedly be set to turn to Romero once more.
According to Metro, the Argentine is on Chelsea’s shortlist of potential goalkeeping options ahead of the 2021/22 season and they could look to bring him to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.
The 34-year-old has been unattached since his release by Manchester United last month, bringing to an end a six-year spell at Old Trafford after once again being signed as a free agent from Monaco in 2015.
In the time since, the 96-cap international has gone on to make 61 appearances for the Red Devils as he assumed a back-up role behind David de Gea. He grew his trophy cabinet considerably in Manchester though having won the Europa League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.
It is certainly not the first time that Chelsea have been linked to Romero. As per ESPN, the Blues were also eyeing the stopper last August, with him looking certain to depart Manchester United with the Red Devils having had plenty of goalkeeping options in the form of de Gea, Dean Henderson and Lee Grant.
