This is a debut season for Trevoh Chalobah, especially after scoring his first goal in his first game in the Champions League against Juventus. Earlier on in the season, he scored his first Premier League goal in the Blues 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Chelsea was linked with defenders in the summer transfer window, including Jules Kounde. They are still believed to be interested in some other candidates for January but do the club need to spend money on one when they already have a homegrown prospect of their own?

Carefree Chelsea’s presenter and writer Anita Abayomi (AA) spoke with social producer, Jai Mcintosh (JM) on Wednesday morning’s Carefree Chelsea show about Chalobah’s recent performance against Italian giants, Juventus…

AA: “The thing about Trevoh Chalobah is that no disrespect to Jules Kounde at all. The fact that we were entertaining during summer. Not knowing that we had in the locker someone who is astonishing.

“Assuming everyone is tied down with their contracts I don’t think we need to seek a Jules Kounde contract. I think if Sevilla lowered the asking price then, of course, you go and get Kounde.

“But, you don’t need him when we have Chalobah. We don’t need de Ligt. Everyone was talking about de Ligt coming to Chelsea but he’s mediocre compared to Chalobah.

“Let’s cherish what we have at the moment, which is a young Trevoh Chalobah who is only getting better. His positional awareness is going to get better, his awareness in front of the goal will too.

“Let’s just cherish what we have at the moment. The way Thomas Tuchel has been using him has been sensational. Really and truly Tuchel could have gone with Azpilicueta to play centre-back.

“But, he said no he’s going to trust in Trevoh Chalobah and that’s what he did. I respect him. A goal on your Champions League debut. He celebrated right in front of me and I was close to tears.”
