Martin Odegaard has been nothing short of sensational since his arrival in the red half of North London in January.
The 22-year-old Norwegian’s influence has grown with each passing game, the midfielder has made nine appearances for the Gunners, with Odegaard notching two goals for Arsenal, most notably against fierce local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the recent dramatic 2-1 North London derby victory.
The Norway national team captain is currently only scheduled to stay at Arsenal until the end of the campaign before returning to parent club Real Madrid in the summer. However, reports suggest Arsenal are incredibly keen on making Odegaard’s stay long-term.
Unfortunately for Arteta’s side, Odegaard’s performances have caught the attention of a number of Europe’s top sides, reportedly including French giants Paris Saint-Germain – managed of course, by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.
According to the Daily Star, PSG director Leonardo is a huge fan of Odegaard. It is undeniable the French outfit would have far less struggle plucking up the cash to acquire his services on a permanent basis than Arsenal would, though Mikel Arteta remains adamant Odegaard is very happy in London.
If Zinedine Zidane remains in the Real Madrid dugout, Odegaard’s days at the Santiago Bernabeu appear to be numbered. Having already enjoyed a successful loan stint in La Liga with Real Sociedad, it is widely reported the midfielder is keen to try pastures new.
Whether that will be the Premier League or Ligue 1 remains to be seen, but Odegaard will undoubtedly have a lengthy list of admirers come the summer transfer window.
The midfielder recently refused to rule out the possibility of staying at Arsenal once his loan spell from Real Madrid finishes at the end of the season.
“You never know what happens, but first of all my focus is about the rest of the season,” he told Norwegian station TV2.
“Hopefully help the team, and then we’ll see what happens.”
The summer transfer window is just around the corner.
And the rumour mill is already starting to pick up speed.
Arsenal will not have a huge amount of money to spend, but Mikel Arteta will be hoping to make a number of moves, with loanee Martin Odegaard high up the list of priorities to bring in on a permanent deal.
But who would you sign? Get involved in our transfer window debate here.
Arteta himself has already hinted that he would open to the idea of Odegaard moving to Arsenal on a permanent transfer in the future, but admitted there are still certain things that need to be ironed out first.
“He certainly has all the qualities and characteristics that we are looking for for that position,” he said last month.
“Then it will be down to two things. First of all, how well he adapts here and how much of an impact he can have in our team.
“Secondly, what Real Madrid and the player think about it because he’s owned by Real Madrid and the player has a big say in that too.”
